For shoppers on a budget, the IXS TrailRS Evo offers a great price-to-features ratio. It provides a versatile fit through a lightweight and flexible internal cradle and a micro-disc rear dial, and the sturdy visor will fold out of the way in a crash. Lack of MIPS keeps the price down, but IXS meets European and American safety standards and believes molding its foam inner shell directly to the outer hard shell provides optimal safety.

Specifications

  • Affordable
  • Highly adjustable visor features quick-release in case of a crash
  • Wide-ranging fit options
  • In-mold protection

Main Features

I found all of the paddings to be really comfortable, especially the front, which is soft and absorbs a lot of sweat and keeps it out of my eyes. The fit is snug: my 57cm head circumference felt a little tight in the S/M model, especially around the temples, but I got used to this and hope that the snugness equates to better fit on impact.

IXS TrailRS EVO

On one hand it scores good points with its low weight, good ventilation and very reasonable price. On the other it offers a great fit, a very good adjustment system, a lower rear-skull profile and a good all-round edge protection. Only the size and adjustment options of the visor could be slightly better. Technically the construction of the helmet is flawless.

Another helmet that excludes MIPS in favor of its own safety system, the Leatt DBX 3.0 serves up 360-degree Turbine Technology, which the company says reduces up to 30 percent of head impact at concussion levels and up to 40 percent of rotational force to the brain and head. With lots of ventilation and a nifty magnetic Fidlock strap-closure system, the Leatt DBX 3.0 also weighs in on the light side at 360 grams. In another innovative touch, the helmet features a unique “hydration-ready” system for supporting your bladder pack.

The rubbery single control knob made adjustments a snap and rounded out the overall impression that this helmet is dialed in well.

The inner retention system is strong, light, and felt like it connected my head close to the helmet shell. I am not a fan of helmets that move around on the chassis atop your head, so this is a nice feature.

Specialized Ambush Helmet

For 2021, the Ambush offers two MIPs options. Featuring a generous visor that easily flips up and down. The Specialized Ambush is a great all-around helmet. It has plenty of venting, generous rear coverage, and an easy-to-use tension dial for fine-tuning fit. Its “Gutter Action Brow” liner, designed to channel sweat away from your eyes, actually works. It doesn’t hurt that my Ambush matches the color of my Evil Following MB frame, although Evil’s “smashing pumpkins” color designation may not translate comfortably to the helmet world.

Specifications

  • Low weight
  • Wide visor adjustability
  • Well ventilated
  • Internal “Mindset 360” system offers around-the-head tension adjustment

Main Features

There are 20 vents along with internal channeling that’s designed to keep air flowing in and out of the helmet. The ratcheting dial for the Mindset 360 adjustable retention system is cleverly integrated into the shell of the helmet, part of the reason the helmet is able to extend so low in the back. Pairing goggles with a half shell helmet is a common occurrence these days, which is why the Ambush’s visor has such a wide range of motion.

Specialized Ambush

There are no screws to loosen or dials to turn to adjust its height; instead, it pivots on a serrated track, giving it fifteen available positions. The shape around the ears and forehead has also been designed to allow sunglasses to be worn without the shell getting in the way.

Our Verdict on Best Mountain Bike Helmets

The best mountain bike helmets offer extra protection around the sides and back of the head. In many cases, they also include a visor to shield your eyes from the sun, rain and debris. You’ll also notice they are chunkier and less aerodynamic than the road bike equivalent.

MIPS and other protective features will improve the safety of a helmet but poor fitting will somehow reduce the ability of even the safest helmet to protect you in the event of a crash.
