March Madness on a Budget: Family Fun in Host Cities

March Madness is a big basketball tournament in the US every March and April. It’s for college teams from Division I of the NCAA. There are 68 teams in total, and they play in a knockout style, meaning if you lose a game, you’re out. These teams get into the tournament in two ways. Some are chosen because they won their conference championships. A committee picks others based on how good they are.

The tournament starts with four play-in games called the “First Four”. Then comes the first and second rounds, followed by the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight, where the best teams face off. Finally, there’s the Final Four, which decides the national champion. It’s a big deal in the US and gets fans’ attention and excitement.

• RiverScape MetroPark: This park is located along the Great Miami River and offers a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, and ice skating (in winter). The park also has a playground, a carousel, and a splash pad, making it a great place for kids to run and play. Admission is free, and the park is open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM during your visit dates.

• Cox Arboretum MetroPark: This 170-acre park is located just outside of Dayton and features a variety of gardens, trails, and a nature centre. Admission is free, and the park is open from 8:00 AM to sunset during your visit dates.

• National Museum of the U.S. Air Force: Immerse yourselves in aviation history with the world’s largest collection of military aircraft and spacecraft, spanning over 1900 artefacts. Admission & Parking is free but there is a charge for Air Force Museum Theatre and flight simulators, and the museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM during your visit dates.

• Dayton Art Institute: While not free during your visit, the DAI offers diverse art collections for various admission fees: adults ($15), seniors/military/groups ($10), students/youth ($5), and children (free). Museum members enjoy free admission.

• St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Celebrate Irish heritage with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade happening on March 17th in downtown Dayton. This free event features colourful floats, marching bands, and Irish dancers.
