History Of Marks & Spencer

Marks & Spencer was founded over 130 years ago by Jewish immigrant Michael Marks, who moved to the north of England from his hometown of Slonim, Belarus. He arrived with little money and a shaky command of the English language.

He began as a peddler and soon owned a market stall in Leeds' Kirkgate Market. He priced everything, but when the penny section thrived, he quickly stopped selling more expensive items.
